How we'd improve the Nexus Q
The Google Nexus Q is the coolest sphere sitting atop our entertainment center. OK, so it's the only sphere we've got. And despite how cool it looks, and its great build quality, it really doesn't do all that much, especially when you consider its $299 price tag.
Of course, that was before Google decided to shelve the Nexus Q, ceasing sales and giving away a free sphere to anyone who preordered. Now it sits in a state of limbo as Google works "on making it even better." Maybe it'll return. Maybe it won't. We're holding out hope.
So how would we improve the Nexus Q? We've got a few ideas.

Anne Hathaway in Talks for Robopocalypse
It?s only been 10 days since Tom Rothman resigned as chairman of 20th Century Fox?s feature film division, but the former executive hasn?t wasted any time starting the next chapter of his career. According to a press release from DreamWorks, Rothman has signed on to produce Steven Spielberg?s sci-fi spectacular Robopocalypse.
But that?s not all. In other Robopocalypse news, A-list actress Anne Hathaway is reportedly in discussions to play the female lead in the film. If Hathaway took the part, she would potentially be starring opposite Chris Hemsworth, who was reported to be in negotiations for the project earlier this summer.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news of Rothman?s possible involvement in Robopocalypse, as well as the news that Hathaway was circling the project.
While he was at Fox, Rothman was largely responsible for securing the film?s foreign distribution rights, so it?s not much of a surprise to learn of his involvement in producing the movie. Likewise, the news of Hathaway?s possible involvement is unsurprising, since the 29-year-old actress seems to be rumored for roles in virtually every major upcoming movie.
The Academy Award-nominated actress has been in high demand for years, but Hathway?s recent turn as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Christopher Nolan?s blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises has pushed the actress into another realm entirely. Hathaway?s next role will be as the prostitute Fantine in the musical Les Miserables, which hits theaters this Christmas.
While Spielberg?s next film, Lincoln, is likely to deliver outstanding drama and will be a must-watch movie, it?s exciting to imagine the visionary director taking on another epic sci-fi project. As Spielberg himself explained at the beginning of the year, Robopocalypse presents an opportunity to go back to the kind of thoughtful, but action-packed filmmaking he showed with the excellent Minority Report.
?It?s a movie about a global war between man and machine. I had a great time creating the future on ?Minority Report,? and it?s a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would. ?Robopocalypse? takes place in 15 or 20 years, so it?ll be another future we can relate to. It?s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. It?s not the newest theme, it?s been done throughout science fiction, but it?s a theme that becomes more relevant every year.?
Robopocalypse is expected to start production in early 2013 and will be released the following year on April 25th, 2014.

Is WITE the Perfect Gold ETF Complement? - Zacks Investment ...
With the central bank easing again in what is being termed QE3, investors are beginning to reconsider some of the holdings. After all, with rates apparently poised to stay at underwhelming levels for at least the next three years, it doesn?t make much sense to push into bonds and especially low yielding short-term Treasury securities.
This trend has made stocks, and particularly precious metals, more attractive investments as fears over inflation and a move away from low yields are causing investors to continue to sell off their bond holdings. This has been especially true in the gold market, as the price of the yellow metal saw an immediate boost after the announcement of QE3 suggesting that some investors are ready to make a bet on precious metals once more (see Precious Metals ETFs 101).
As always, precious metal investors are focusing in on gold for their exposure in the space as the metal remains the most popular for those seeking hard asset holdings. In addition to being the most talked about metal, the product is also the least used from an industrial perspective, a factor that makes gold an easy choice for some investors seeking an inflation hedge in today?s easy money environment.
Still, this strategy suggests that many investors are likely heavily concentrated in gold while having little?if any?holdings in the ?white? precious metals of platinum, palladium, and silver. This can be potentially troubling in this market environment, as gold has actually been the worst performing of the four in the third quarter of 2012 while the yellow metal has only beaten out one of its precious metal counterparts (palladium) from a year-to-date look.
While it is true that gold has greatly outperformed over the trailing one year period, it is pretty clear that some diversification in the metals market can help to improve overall investor returns in the space. Since many investors already have gold bullion or gold ETFs like GLD, IAU, or SGOL in their portfolios, a look solely at the ?white metals? could be the way to go (see Gold ETFs: Why Bid Ask Spreads Matter).
Investors can certainly buy up any of the three metals in bullion form but an ETF approach can also be taken as well. In this segment, ETF investors can look to any number of physically-backed or futures-based ETFs that offer exposure to silver, platinum, or palladium.
Beyond these individual ETFs, there is also a relatively new choice which invests in all three of the white metals in a single basket. This product, the ETF Securities White Metal Basket Share (WITE) could thus potentially be a great way to balance precious metal exposure without doubling down on gold (read Zacks #1 Ranked Silver ETFs).
WITE in Focus
This ETF charges investors roughly 60 basis points a year for its services of holding bars of silver, palladium, and platinum in secure vaults in Europe. The trust uses the LBMA and LPPM?s rules for Good Delivery and the metals are inspected twice a year in order to give investors peace of mind over their precious metal investment.
In terms of individual metal exposure, the product definitely has a tilt towards silver, although platinum and palladium make up double digit allocations as well. At the time of the last fact sheet, the ETF was roughly 60% in silver, 29% in platinum, and 11% in palladium. This translates into just under one ounce of silver, .0010 ounces of platinum, and .008 ounces of palladium for each share of WITE (see Platinum ETF Investing 101).
With this focus, silver clearly drives the return of the overall fund, although the more expensive metals also have their place as well. Still, it could provide a nice diversifier for investors looking for more precious metal exposure without the continued heavy influence of gold.
In fact, in the one month, QTD, and YTD time periods, WITE has easily outperformed the major gold ETFs on the market. However, the product has underperformed gold ETFs in the trailing one year period, although the relatively balanced approach has helped it to outperform at least one of the white metals no matter what in all of the time frames studied (see The Five Best ETFs over the Past Five Years).
Thanks to this, WITE can be considered a very interesting compliment for the many investors who already have gold?in some form?in their portfolios. While the product may be a bit concentrated in silver, it still provides reasonably diversified exposure across the three white metals of silver, platinum, and palladium, suggesting that it could be a solid physically-backed ETF pick to round out precious metal holdings for those that are concerned about QE and its eventual impact on inflation.

Apple seeks U.S. Samsung sales ban, $707 million more in damages
SEOUL: Apple Inc. has asked for a court order for a permanent U.S. sales ban on Samsung Electronics products alleged to have violated its patents along with additional damages of $707 million on top of the billion-dollar verdict won by the iPhone maker last month. Samsung has responded by asking for a new trial. The world?s top two smartphone makers are locked in patent battles in 10 countries as they vie for top spot in the lucrative, fast-growing market.
Apple scored a legal victory over Samsung in late August when a U.S. jury found that the Korean firm had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded the U.S. firm $1.05 billion in damages.
In a motion filed Friday U.S. time, Apple sought a further $400 million damage award for design infringement by Samsung; $135 million for willful infringement of its utility patents; $121 million in supplemental damages based on Samsung?s product sales not covered in the jury?s deliberation; and $50 million of prejudgment interest on damages through Dec. 31. The requests together come to $707 million.
Apple wants the injunction to cover ?any of the infringing products or any other product with a feature or features not more than colorably different from any of the infringing feature or features in any of the infringing products.?
Such a wide-ranging sales ban could result in the extension of the injunction to cover Samsung?s brand-new Galaxy S III smartphone.
Samsung, in a filing to the U.S. court, asked for a new trial to be held.
?The court?s constraints on trial time, witnesses and exhibits were unprecedented for a patent case of this complexity and magnitude, and prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple?s many claims,? Samsung said.
?Samsung therefore respectfully requests that the court grant a new trial enabling adequate time and even-handed treatment of the parties.?
In a separate statement, Samsung lamented the fact that patent rulings should cover issues such as the shape of the product in addition to technological points. ?It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies,? it said.
The Korean firm earlier this week said it plans to add Apple?s new iPhone 5 to the existing U.S. patent lawsuits, stepping up its legal challenge as the two companies seek to assert rights to key technologies.
Apple said it wanted awarded damages to reflect ?a fair effort to address Samsung?s willful misconduct that has and will impose lasting harm on Apple.?
The Korean firm was the world?s top smartphone maker in the second quarter of this year, shipping more than 50 million phones, nearly double Apple?s 26 million iPhone shipments.
Both companies are raising their marketing spending to promote their latest products ahead of the year-end shopping season.

Human brains outpace chimp brains in womb
ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Humans' superior brain size in comparison to their chimpanzee cousins traces all the way back to the womb. That's according to a study reported in the September 25 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that is the first to track and compare brain growth in chimpanzee and human fetuses.
"Nobody knew how early these differences between human and chimp brains emerged," said Satoshi Hirata of Kyoto University.
Hirata and colleagues Tomoko Sakai and Hideko Takeshita now find that human and chimp brains begin to show remarkable differences very early in life. In both primate species, the brain grows increasingly fast in the womb initially. After 22 weeks of gestation, brain growth in chimpanzees starts to level off, while that of humans continues to accelerate for another two months or more. (Human gestation time is only slightly longer than that of chimpanzees, 38 weeks versus 33 or 34 weeks.)
The findings are based on 3D ultrasound imaging of two pregnant chimpanzees from approximately 14 to 34 weeks of gestation and comparison of those fetal images to those of human fetuses. While early brain differences were suspected, no one had previously measured the volume of chimpanzee brains as they develop in the womb until now.
The findings are part of a larger effort by the research team to explore differences in primate brains. In another Current Biology report published last year, they compared brain development in chimps versus humans via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of three growing chimpanzees from the age of six months to six years.
"Elucidating these differences in the developmental patterns of brain structure between humans and great apes will provide important clues to understand the remarkable enlargement of the modern human brain and humans' sophisticated behavior," Sakai said.
The researchers say they now hope to explore fetal development in particular parts of the brain, including the forebrain, which is critical for decision making, self-awareness, and creativity.

3-D ?movie? made of electrons moving at nearly light speed

Scientists have harnessed an imaging technique to create a 3-D visualization of electrons moving at nearly light speed on and in a futuristic material that could replace silicon in electronic devices of tomorrow.
The technique can capture increments of time at the level of femtoseconds ? that is millionths of a billionth of a second. By stitching together these images, they are able to create movies of electrons as they scatter in response to a short pulse of light.
The interior of the futuristic material, called topological insulators (TIs), almost completely blocks any flow of electrons, but the surface is a conductor that allows electrons to travel at almost the speed of light unimpeded by impurities.
?Because of these characteristics, TIs are seen as a promising new material for electronic circuits and data storage devices,? the Massachusetts Institute of Technology explains in a?press release.
?But developing such new devices requires a better understanding of exactly how electrons move around on and inside the TI, and how the surface electrons interact with those inside the material.?
A research team, led by graduate student Yihua Wang and assistant professor of physics Nuh Gedik at MIT, have done just that using the ?pump-probe? technique they pioneered to create 3-D images of the energy, momentum and spin of electrons within topological insulators.
The university describes the technique this way:
It uses a short pulse of laser light to energize the material, causing electrons to scatter, and a second, slightly delayed pulse to illuminate it and produce an image. ?The first pulse does something to the electrons, and the second pulse captures what happened,? Gedik explains.
Then, the process is repeated, with the second laser pulse delayed by ever-increasing increments of just a few femtoseconds. Each resulting image shows the response of the electrons to the beam after a corresponding interval. These images can then be assembled into a movie that shows how the response changes with time.
Using the technique, the researchers found that electrons on the topological insulator surface interact with interior electrons via sound waves and the interaction happens more intensely at high temperatures.
Understanding these interactions, Gedik notes, will help shape future work on topological insulators. Current proposals for futuristic data storage devices made with the material, for example, are based on the behavior of surface electrons.

Spain's?markets have improved in recent weeks on expectations that the government will get some form of rescue loan from the 16 other eurozone countries. But Madrid has not made any formal request yet, likely wary of the policy conditions that would come attached.
The delay pushed the country's bond yields sharply higher on Monday, suggesting an increase in investor concern about the government's finances. The yields eased back somewhat on Tuesday after a bond auction was well-received. The sale of 12- and 18-month debt saw strong demand and resulted in lower interest rates than in the previous such auctions.
The auction result helped markets, but tensions remained ? by midafternoon in Europe,?Spain's?main stock index was still down 1.4 percent.
"Investors appear to be turning nervous," said Kintai Cheung, analyst at Credit Agricole CIB.
Elsewhere, Britain's FTSE 100 closed down Tuesday down 0.4 percent to 5,868 and Germany's DAX shed 0.7 percent to 7,347. France's CAC-40 lost 1.15 percent to 3,512.
Wall Street had a muted opening, with the Dow up 0.04 percent to 13,475 and the S&P 500 losing 0.3 percent to 1,457. Asian indexes closed mostly lower.
Analysts say the stock losses are also a pull-back from highs hit last week, when the U.S. Federal Reserve triggered a market rally with the announcement of new stimulus measures. Faced with a struggling recovery in the world's biggest economy, the Fed announced plans to buy $40 billion of mortgage bonds a month for as long as necessary as part of a strategy to boost borrowing and spending. The Fed also extended its pledge to keep short-term interest rates low until 2015, a year longer than its previous target.
The size of the program buoyed confidence in the global economy, and stocks rallied. Since then, however, investors have begun to re-examine the big picture and to see substantial headwinds on the horizon.
"I think the outlook in the near term for the global economy is still fairly negative," said Peter Elston, strategist at Aberdeen Asset Management in Singapore. "I suspect that further weakness is just around the corner, which might explain the greater than expected easing by the Fed."
Losses began earlier in the day in Asia. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 9,123.77. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.3 percent to 20,601.93 and Australia's S&P ASX/200 fell 0.2 percent to 4,394.70.
Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan also fell. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.9 percent to 2,059.54 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.6 percent to 859.44.
Bucking the trend was South Korea's Kospi, which gained 0.1 percent to 2,004.96.
Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 61 cents to $95.98 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.38, or 2.4 percent, to finish at $96.62 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday, when trading was marked by huge volatility.
In currencies, the euro fell slightly to $1.3047 from $1.3107. The dollar fell to 78.58 yen from 78.74 yen.

Reality check on Jesus and his 'wife'
New questions are being raised after Karen King, a professor at Harvard Divinity School, found an ancient papyrus with text that quotes Jesus referring to "my wife." NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

A fourth-century fragment of papyrus that quotes Jesus telling his disciples about "my wife" has set off a buzz among scriptural scholars?? but this is no "Da Vinci Code" come true. Rather, the "Gospel of Jesus' Wife" is just the latest discovery to suggest how the early Christian church took shape.
Fans of the Dan Brown thriller are already familiar with the theory that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a husband-and-wife relationship. The basis for such speculation lies in Gnostic gospels that came out in the second, third and fourth centuries, but were left out of the standardized scriptures ? texts such as the Gospel of Philip, the Gospel of Mary and the recently reconstructed Gospel of Judas.
Even though only a few phrases can be read on the papyrus fragment that's just come to light, those phrases are consistent with the Gnostic view of early Christianity ??which tended to give a more prominent role to women, and particularly to Mary Magdalene. The text, written in the Sahidic Coptic dialect, includes the phrase "Jesus said to them, 'My wife...'" as well as references to a woman named Mary being "worthy of it," and to a woman who "will be able to be my disciple." ?
The marriage debate
Karen L. King, the Harvard Divinity School professor who received the fragment from an anonymous owner, emphasized that the discovery does not serve as evidence that Jesus was married.?Rather, it suggests that there was a debate within the early Christian church on the status of women, and that Jesus' relationship with women figured into the discussion. Revisiting that debate may be unsettling to some believers, but to scriptural scholars, it just comes with the territory.
Four words on a previously unknown papyrus fragment appear to provide the first evidence that some early Christians believed Jesus had been married. This video from Harvard Divinity School discusses the find.
"Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim," King said in a news release from Harvard Divinity School. "This new gospel doesn't prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage. From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus' death before they began appealing to Jesus' marital status to support their positions."
Ben Witherington, a New Testament scholar at the Asbury Theological Seminary, noted that the latest find fits King's perspective on scriptural scholarship. "She does have a dog in this hunt," he told me. "She's an advocate for the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Judas, telling us of early Christian experiences of various kinds, particularly of the Gnostic kind."
The fragment that King calls the Gospel of Jesus' Wife could well contribute to the study of Gnosticism in the second or fourth century, but Witherington said it's not a game-changer for our view of the first-century Jesus.?"While this fragment is interesting, if you are interested in the historical Jesus, this is much ado about not very much," Witherington said via email.
Witherington noted that experts who have gotten a close look at the papyrus say it's genuine, ?but he cautioned that "we cannot be absolutely sure of its authenticity or origins" as long as scholars can't track down the details surrounding how, when and where it was discovered.
Bart Ehrman, a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, voiced similar caution. However, if the document proves authentic, it would represent an important advance in scriptural scholarship, he said.?
"It's certainly not reliable for saying anything about the historical Jesus," Ehrman told me. "But what it is important for is that this would be the first time we have any Christian authority or Christian group indicating that, in their opinion, Jesus was married." Like King, Ehrman suggested that such claims might have figured into early Christian debates over the comparative merits of marriage vs. celibacy.?
Monks and 'sister-wives'?
Witherington said the text could be open to alternate interpretations. "In view of the largely ascetic character of Gnosticism, it is likely that we are dealing with the 'sister-wife' phenomenon, and the reference is to a strictly spiritual relationship, which is close but does not involve sexual intimacy," Witherington said.
During a follow-up phone call, he explained that "during the rise of the monastic movement, you had quite a lot of monk-type folks and evangelists who traveled in the company of a sister-wife." The fellow travelers looked after each other, but celibacy was part of the deal, he said.
"The other question about this is ... were these 'fractured fairy tales' that helped monks in the desert while away the time, or were they serious religious texts?" Witherington said.
Gnostic works proliferated in Egypt's Christian monasteries until Athanasius of Alexandria drew up what became the "official" list of books in the New Testament and condemned the rest in the year 367. Scholars believe that the best-known collection of Gnostic texts, the Nag Hammadi library, was bundled up and buried in the desert as a result.
The debate over the papyrus fragment's authenticity and the meaning of the Gospel of Jesus' Wife is likely to play out for a long time among scriptural scholars ? and among "Da Vinci Code" fans as well. For now, here are links to background material and the initial blog reactions:

- Jim West, a biblical scholar at the Quartz Hill School of Theology and pastor of Petros Baptist Church in Tennessee, says on the Zwinglius Redivivus blog that "without more context, both historically and archaeologically, the snippet is valueless."?
- James McGrath, a New Testament scholar at Butler University in Indianapolis, also voices caution on the?Exploring Our Matrix blog?but adds that there's no reason why people should find the idea that Jesus was married "inherently unbelievable."
Update for 9 p.m. ET: Some observers have pointed out that the New Testament contains multiple allusions to Jesus as a bridegroom, and the church or the collective people of God as his bride. This report from The Atlantic?catalogs the references.?However, Witherington said the Coptic papyrus appears to refer to a different kind of relationship. "A bride is one thing, and a wife is another," he told me. The fragment's additional references to "Mary" and a prospective woman disciple also argue against attaching a purely metaphorical meaning to the word "wife."

49ers take top spot in AP Pro32 power rankings
NEW YORK (AP) ? An efficient Alex Smith and a rock-solid defense have the San Francisco 49ers on top of the AP Pro32 power rankings.
Smith threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns and the 49ers shut down the explosive Lions in a 27-19 win over the weekend, giving San Francisco a second win over a playoff team from last season. The 2-0 Niners moved up from second in the latest AP Pro32 regular-season poll released Tuesday, receiving 11 of the 12 first-place votes and 383 points from the media panel who regularly cover the NFL.
Houston advanced two spots to second with one first-place vote and 360 points, eight points ahead of Green Bay, which started the season on top. Atlanta is fourth, followed by Baltimore and Philadelphia, up six places after a second straight one-point win.
"There isn't much not to like about the 49ers," voter Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune said in putting the 49ers first for the second week in a row. "At this point, the only question is who is No. 2?"
That would be the Texans, winners in each of their games by 20 points.
"The Texans have the NFL's top defense and a 2-0 record to show for it," reasoned Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News, the only voter with Houston ahead of San Francisco.
Everyone else went with the 49ers, who opened the season with a big win at Green Bay before dominating the Lions at home.
"Almost everyone has holes, but you have to look hard to find any with this team," commented Clark Judge of CBSSports.com "... and, please, could we stop the Alex Smith as 'game manager' talk? It's not only old; it's inaccurate."
New England, meanwhile, fell from the top spot to seventh following a surprising 20-18 loss at home to Arizona.
"Week 2 mulligan," ESPN's Chris Berman called it.
San Diego made the biggest jump, up eight spots to ninth.
"Norv has this team believing," said Rich Gannon of CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio. "More team speed on D doesn't hurt either."
A pair of winless teams took the biggest tumbles ? Kansas City dropped 10 spots to No. 31 and New Orleans eight places to 22nd after entering the season ninth.
"Think the Saints don't miss suspended head coach Sean Payton?" asked Newsday's Bob Glauber. "Perhaps an 0-2 start, something they'd avoided since 2007, will convince."
Added Pompei: "We knew they would miss Sean Payton, but they may be the most disappointing team in the NFL."
Denver, which reached sixth last week after Peyton Manning's successful debut in a win over the Steelers, fell back earth with a loss in Atlanta on Monday night. Manning had three interceptions in the first quarter in the 27-21 loss, and his Broncos dropped five spots to 11th.
"Manning will correct the interceptions and the defense has pass rushers," said Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com in ranking Denver fourth this week. "They will be close to impossible to beat at home. Look for more teams to use the 'radar' defense against Manning that the Falcons employed."
Jacksonville is 32nd and last.
"Nine punts, nine first downs ? welcome to the NFL's version of the Mendoza Line," quipped Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.
